Meet Samuel B. Ings

Born and Raised in Orlando

Samuel B. Ings was born in Orlando and lived in the Murchinson Terrace Housing Apartments in Washington Shores, along with his father, mother and siblings. It was here where he learned that an honest, hardworking lifestyle would take him far.

Samuel B. Ings’ dad Charles R. Ings, who passed away on January 12, 2019, was Orlando’s first black detective and was the first black officer assigned to a white partner.

Samuel B. Ings is a graduate of Boone High School.

Samuel B. Ings has earned several advanced degrees:

  • Rollins College  (Master’s of Science in  Criminal Justice and a  Master’s in Management)

  • Orlando College (Master’s of Science in  Business Administration)

  • Rollins College (Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice)

  • Valencia Community College (AS Law Enforcement) - Adjunct Professor

Career in Law Enforcement

Samuel B. Ings is a graduate of the 171st Class of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.

Samuel B. Ings retired as a Captain of OPD after 30 years of service. He was one of four finalists for the Chief of Police in 1979.

Represents Tourist District

Samuel also represents Orlando's tourist district, which includes many of world’s largest theme parks and attractions.

Universal, FunSpot America, Idrive Nascar and many other hotel and resorts along International Drive have benefitted under his leadership as the Commissioner representing this area vital to Orlando’s economy.

Samuel B. Ings was first elected in 2006 as the Orlando District 6 Commissioner, representing over 43,000 residents. He has consistently made improvements for residents and businesses, including converting an old vacant bank to a police station. He added a new fire station, as well as new roads and new sewer systems and LED lighting for neighborhoods. Samuel’s district has grown tremendously. National grocery store chains have replaced food deserts. Economic development is visible throughout the district.

Samuel B. Ings is one of the most inclusive, compassionate, and nonjudgmental persons that you will ever meet.  He doesn’t care about backgrounds, age, race, religion, gender, or economic status. He’s always been and will continue to address you with respect and dignity. He smiles frequently and has a great sense of humor. He is very approachable and will always stop to talk to you at the grocery store, in church or at a restaurant. He is a problem-solver and a patient listener. He is a man of action.
